WATERLAND study begins at IRB-permitted sites
The first WATERLAND patient has been recruited

Hello everyone, we wanted to give you some updates on WATERLAND trial. After finishing the electronic case report form and testing it by several colleagues, the WATERLAND study has started in those centers with permission from their local IRBs.
At the moment 9 centers can start recruiting. If you already have permission from your local IRB, write to Alicia Vaillo to schedule a training session on the practical aspects of WATERLAND by our collaborator María Belén Garay.
The first patient was recruited on June 19 by Lucía Guilabert in Alicante, 2 days ago. Thank you Lucía! There are only 719 left.
Remember that there are a number of very important aspects to keep in mind when recruiting patients:
You should not leave any fields unfilled, missing data can make data analysis very difficult, so get the data you need at each checkpoint so as not to lose them. Do not delay getting the data.
the REDcap-based online case report form will tell you everything you have to do, do not store the data on paper to enter them later to the program, enter them when you attend the patient and follow its instructions.
Plan well the steps to be taken between recruitment and the first 24h and between 24 and 48h. When requesting the 24 and 48h blood test, do not forget any of the mandatory parameters, they are provided in REDCap.
Don't forget to order C-reactive protein 48 hours after recruitment, enter the units correctly in REDCap. In WATERFALL we had many errors in this parameter, with a lot of missing data and with results and units that did not match.
If a patient has SIRS at 48h, elevated C-reactive protein levels or there is clinical suspicion of local complications, you should request an abdominal CT scan from the 3rd day of admission to rule out local complications, according to standard clinical practice.
Schedule an adequate follow-up, and make sure that 24 and 48h checkpoints will be covered by a collaborator on weekends. Every missing is a tragedy, dear friends
