A significant milestone has been achieved in the WATERLAND clinical trial: half of the patients have been enrolled
32 centers from 13 countries have recruited patients
Thanks to a significant international effort, half of the patients in the erica consortium’s WATERLAND study have been recruited.
WATERLAND is an international, open-label, multicenter clinical trial comparing fluid resuscitation based on lactated Ringer's solution versus normal saline in acute pancreatitis.
According to the sample size calculation, 720 patients are required to know if lactated Ringer's solution is associated with 10% less severity than saline-based fluid therapy.
Thirty-two centers in 13 countries have enrolled patients from June 2023 to February 2024. This makes it the largest international randomized clinical trial ever conducted in acute pancreatitis! Three hundred sixty-eight patients have been recruited from centers in Spain, Mexico, Pakistan, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Argentina, Croatia, Greece, Egypt, India, USA, Bolivia, and China, exceeding the threshold of 360 patients, half of the sample size.
SIDS hospital (Dr Rajiv Mehta's team) is the center that has recruited the most patients, thanks!!!, followed by Dr. Balmis General University Hospital in Alicante, Spain.
Thanks to all contributors! We expect the recruitment to be completed by the end of 2024. We are working on incorporating new centers in the European Union and the United Kingdom soon.
